Top 5 Tips on Laying Paving Slabs

Laying a patio is a big undertaking, and the first tip here is probably to get a professional in to do it for you but if you are feeling the DIY feels then here are our top tips.

1.      Choose the right slab for you

When building out your patio, the various shades, materials, and finishes need to be considered. This decision is something you are going to have to live with for a long time. So, consider all your options and choose wisely. You can get one single shade or invest in some Indian sandstone project packs that come in various complementing shades to add a bit of warmth and style to your patio. You can even mix and match by yourself- add a bit of your own personality to the mix.

2.      Take the time to Plan

Measure twice, cut once as they say. Take the time to consider all the factors that could affect your patio. From giving it a “fall” so rainwater cannot accumulate to thinking about the depth at which you will lay your patio- which can affect your ease of mowing.

3.      Gather your ingredients

Cost up your materials and gather them swiftly. You can talk to your local builders Merchants who will be able to give you a great deal on the who project pack. You will need the following essentials:

·        Your chosen Paving slabs

·        Cement

·        Fine, kiln-dried block paving sand

·        Building sand

·        Long timber straight edge - for ensuring your sub-base is level

·        Timber or dowel off-cuts - used to make spacers for joints

·        Off-cut piece of timber - to protect the slab when laying

Your Builders’ Merchant should be able to provide all of this.

4.      Wait for some Sun

Working in the rain is no fun for anyone! Wait for a dry spell before starting work on laying your paving down.

5.      Don’t be afraid to ask for help and advice.

Laying paving is not for the faint hearted. They can be heavy, and we recommend you use protective footwear, goggles and gloves when mixing the chemicals and carrying out tasks. Don’t be afraid to ask for help and advice from more experienced builders (who also happen to work at BMCo ltd) who can hand out some nifty tips and tricks.
